Partnership Proposal

M+ × CULTUS

Institutionalising recognitional knowledge through
museum-grade authentication and permanent provenance.

Authentication as artworld-constituting activity. Provenance that survives the carrier.
A shared standard for cultural artifacts between categories.

An authentication institution · A curatorial practice · An artworld in formation

CULTUS

We are a curatorial institution built around a single conviction: that cultural artifacts of movies, music, animation, fashion, and subcultures deserve the same rigour of authentication, provenance, and institutional recognition as fine art.

Authentication as artworld-constituting activity. Provenance that survives the carrier.
A compounding catalog of recognitional knowledge.

Authentication

3-tier system — AI (80%), analysts (15%), expert review (5%) — <0.5% error rate. Every decision trains the ML.

Provenance

NFC chip with permanent cryptographic record embedded in the object itself — not a certificate that can be lost.

The Catalog

Every authenticated item feeds a permanent record of recognitional knowledge — accessible to curators and researchers.

Arthur Danto: something becomes art not through intrinsic properties but by being situated within an artworld that confers art-status. CULTUS constitutes exactly such an artworld for artifacts that existing institutions do not yet serve.

Operational Anchor

Common Interest Vintage and Hobbies — 20+ years of vintage collecting and authentication. Worldwide sourcing network. Lane Crawford partner. CULTUS is the institutional layer built on this foundation.

The Brillo box in a gallery is art. The same box in a stockroom is inventory. The difference is which institution recognizes it.

For-sale · Not-for-sale archival · A growing institutional catalog

The Collection

Authenticated cultural artifacts across five categories — each item chipped, verified, and carrying permanent provenance.

Cel Art Posters Vinyls Vintage Clothing Toys

Not-for-sale archival: Some items are held for curatorial research, exhibition, and institutional study — the foundation of a permanent collection in formation.

Every item authenticated. Every item chipped. Every item carries its provenance permanently.

M+ Retail has no pipeline for authenticated cultural artifacts

The Gap

M+ Retail sells merchandise inspired by exhibitions — books, stationery, design objects. It does not sell the artifacts themselves.

The Other Shop's mission is to be a "gateway to other perspectives... exclusive collections from creators beyond the M+ Collection." Yet the authenticated cultural artifacts that would most naturally sit in that space — cel art, vinyls, vintage clothing, toys — have no institutional retail pipeline.

CULTUS fills the gap

Authentication infrastructure, sourcing network, compounding catalog — built and validated at Lane Crawford. The artifacts themselves, authenticated and chipped.

M+ defines the visual culture canon. CULTUS gives the objects that canon describes a permanent, institutional home.

Lane Crawford IFC · Institutional validation across all categories

Institutional Validation

Lane Crawford — a leading Hong Kong institution — chose CULTUS as their partner for authenticated cultural artifacts.

A two-month exhibition at Lane Crawford IFC spanning all five categories CULTUS serves — cel art, music memorabilia, fashion design, subcultural artifacts, collectibles. Every category sold. Every authentication decision verified.

Zero returns due to authenticity dispute. Methodology validated.

Cel Art Music Memorabilia Fashion Design Subculture Collectibles

Lane Crawford demonstrated that institutional demand for authenticated cultural artifacts is real and cross-category. An M+ partnership represents the next tier — from retail-institutional to museum-institutional.

Three models · One trust chain · Built around M+ Retail's existing infrastructure

Proposed Partnership

01 · The Other Shop Pop-Up

A rotating pop-up at The Other Shop (B1, M+ building) featuring authenticated cultural artifacts — cel art, vinyls, vintage clothing, toys. The Other Shop's mission — "gateway to other perspectives" — is an exact brand match. CULTUS brings inventory, auth infrastructure, and staffing. M+ provides the space and trust signal.

02 · Exhibition-Integrated Retail

M+ Shop already has dedicated category pages for current exhibitions (Design Ah!, Lee Bul). For exhibitions exploring everyday design and visual culture, CULTUS provides a complementary retail experience — authenticated objects from the same cultural categories the exhibition explores. M+ Shop sells merchandise; CULTUS brings the artifacts themselves.

03 · Online Curated Collection

A dedicated "Authenticated Artifacts" collection on shop.mplus.org.hk — M+ Shop's existing platform with 818 SKUs and worldwide shipping. Each item authenticated and chipped by CULTUS, bearing M+ brand association. No physical footprint required. Revenue share on every sale.

Phase 1 (Q3 2026)

Pop-up at The Other Shop (B1) — one category, one quarter. Validate traffic, pricing, and curation model before scaling.

Phase 2 (Q4 2026)

Permanent B1 presence with rotating inventory. Co-branded auth service for M+ acquisitions. Full retail-exhibition-integration pipeline.

Phase 3 (2027)

Dedicated "Authenticated Artifacts" collection on shop.mplus.org.hk. Exhibition-tied retail for next featured show. Worldwide shipping live.

The Other Shop invites "other perspectives." CULTUS brings the artifacts that existing institutional retail does not serve.

Next Steps

M+ Retail already has the infrastructure, the mission, and the audience. CULTUS brings the artifacts, the authentication, and the sourcing. This partnership needs no new construction — only a decision to extend "other perspectives" from merchandise to authenticated cultural objects.

1. Explore The Other Shop Pop-Up

Site visit to The Other Shop (B1). Align on category, timeline, and revenue model for a pilot pop-up — one category, one quarter.

2. Define Partnership Scope

Online collection parameters, exhibition tie-in opportunities, and Phase 2 expansion terms.

Let's build this together.
